Major international motor sports events can generate very significant media attention world-wide and thereby provide excellent opportunities to grow tourism and make cities and regions well known if not world famous. Motor sports events are excellent platforms for destination development, event based tourism and branding. Major events often receive financial government support, not only because it can sometimes be difficult for private operators to fund and fully exploit tourism opportunities, but also because the economic benefits to local businesses and employment can be very significant in addition to the media and television exposure. This will position a range of local organisations to successfully bid for a variety of major events and further establish the region as an attractive destination. With the right strategies and with business and tourism authorities joining forces to take advantage of the leveraging opportunities, significant new or additional economic activity can be generated in the areas of event based tourism as well as general tourism and leisure.
